Agile Change – Addressing the people side of Agile projects

Today, Agile Change represents a prominent approach that you can use to manage your project. It has attracted so much attention due to its effectiveness.

However, it’s not without its challenges. And most of these challenges occur during its adaptation to an existing environment, especially from the people side.

Wondering what this is about? In this article, we’ll discuss addressing the people side of agile projects. But first, what is Agile Change?

What is Agile Change?

Agile Change involves an approach to project management that combines Agile and Change Management.

Individually, Agile involves an approach that prefers incremental changes, interactive work, and collaboration to manage projects. It is usually applied through sprints – consecutive sessions. In this approach, the project stages are iterative and cyclical.

On the other hand, Change Management is a traditional project management approach. And it involves an application of tools and processes to manage a change from point X to point Y. Usually, it is sequential and linear and supports the people aspect of change.

Addressing the People Side of Agile Projects

Usually, during the application of Agile to projects, there is a form of resistance. And this is when Change Management becomes inevitable. It allows project managers to improve the utilisation of Agile to project management.

Precisely, it allows project managers to reduce people’s resistance to the necessary change. To achieve this, Agile Change presents the use of three core actions. They are educating the organisation, engaging sponsors more adequately, and achieving early wins.

Educating and Informing the Organisation about Agile

The most significant contributor to ensuring managers address the people’s side of Agile projects is consistent communication. Individuals must understand the systems and processes that involve Agile projects. This way, they can better relate and feel comfortable during their implementation.

Engaging Sponsors more Adequately

Another essential action that helps the management of projects is active engagement. There are various individuals – sponsors – that play a vital role in the project. For you to address the people side of Agile projects, it is necessary to engage them. This set includes employees and managers, including senior managers.

Also, it’s necessary to engage them early in the project. This is to ensure that they are well aware of the realities of the project. As in every engagement, effective and consistent communication plays a vital role.

Achievement of Early Wins

This is particularly important as it helps reinforce the various changes. Usually, individuals resist changes due to the uncertainty it brings concerning productivity and effectiveness.

However, by achieving early wins, it allows individuals and the team to believe more in the change. This then helps reduce resistance to the change.

In Conclusion

Various obstacles arise during the application of Change Management to Agile Projects. From the absence of understanding to organisational resistance to increased pace, it might be impossible to effectively implement change.

As such, it becomes necessary to address the people side of Agile projects through the actions we have identified.
